featured artist: velvet poindexter, Sand Artist & Visionary Creator

Born and raised in Delaware, Velvet Poindexter’s journey as an artist is one of resilience, self-discovery, and transformation. As a teenager, she faced significant mental health challenges that made it difficult to move forward. Despite years of medical treatments and therapy, true progress remained elusive—until she found healing through art.

What began as a personal coping mechanism—painting on glass, then canvas, and eventually wood—soon evolved into a deep passion for artistic expression. But it was sand painting that unlocked a whole new dimension of creativity and purpose. For the past 10 years, Velvet has embraced this unconventional medium, drawn to its tactile nature and the emotional depth it conveys.

Velvet believes that art should be more than a visual experience—it should be felt. Through textured surfaces and vibrant colors, her work invites viewers to engage with art beyond sight alone, creating a sensory connection that is especially meaningful for neurodivergent and disabled communities. Each of her paintings is a one-of-a-kind reflection of a moment, a feeling, a triumph—impossible to replicate, just like the journey that led her here.

To date, Velvet has showcased her work in over ten gallery exhibitions, with a mission to bring her art to non-traditional spaces where all audiences can fully experience it. But art is more than just her personal passion—it’s a way of life. Her four children also share in the joy of creativity, making art an integral part of their family’s story.

Velvet Poindexter’s work is not just about painting; it’s about connection, healing, and reimagining the way we experience art.
